What Is the Order of These Woods' Strength Used to Make Furniture?

It depends on what you mean by strength. Hardness is not the same as resistance to splitting and just because a particular species is hard doesn't necessarily mean that it is best for all applications. If by strength, you mean characteristics that don't just include hardness That being said, Rosewood is probably slightly harder and heavier than Teak, though Teak has excellent weather resistance due to oils within the wood.

When you work with it your hands get clean and soft. It often has silica sand locked in the grain and can be really tough to work with. It is being farmed as a crop in several parts of the world and is often used in boat building and outdoor furniture due to its weather resistance.

Rosewood is more expensive and is usually used in musical instruments and smaller decorative pieces. It is also made into to veneer for fine furniture and cabinetry. There are several dozen species of Oak, just in North America, and they obviously are not all the same, though they are less dense than Teak or Rosewood.

Red Oak is probably softer than White Oak, which can be used to make barrels because of the uniqueness of the grain. If you made a water container with Red Oak it would leak. Off the top of my head there are also Tan Oak, Pin Oak, Black Oak, Swamp Oak, Live Oak, Silverleaf Oak, and multiple variations of each.

Oak and Teak are high in Tannic acid and will turn grey, then black when exposed to sunlight and especially if in contact with wet steel due to a chemical reaction. This process can be slowed with proper application of the appropriate finishes. Pine is the softest, lightest, and probably cheapest of the four because it grows fast, especially in managed forests where trees are allowed maximum exposure to sun and water.

There are also many varieties of Pine, like Longleaf, Ponderosa, White, Yellow, Red, Lodgepole, Loblolly, and Torrey, to name a few. Pine is often used as framing lumber and as pulp wood to make particle board and paper. It can be quite beautiful, though its relative surface softness is not conducive to fine, delicate furniture.

It is frequently used as interior construction parts of cabinetry and furniture. I hope that answered your question without too much unwanted information. I wasn't sure what exactly you were looking for, so just responded with what came to mind.

Easiest way to get old paint off wood furniture?

Before you can start the stripping process, it is necessary to choose the method that you will use to get rid of that old paint. There are actually three different ways that you can go about stripping paint and varnish.

Be sure to choose the technique that is most suited to your particular project. Sanding: Sanding is one of the oldest methods used to remove paint and varnish. It uses sandpaper in order to remove paint layers and varnish.

It is also great for preparing the surface of your furniture for a new paint job. Sanding can be performed by hand, using a variety of sandpapers or it can be performed using mechanical sanding tools. * Hand Sanding: Hand sanding requires a lot of time and physical effort, but it can be very effective for smaller jobs and more delicate pieces of furniture.

It is best suited for pieces of furniture that only have one existing layer of paint or varnish. * Mechanical Sanding: Mechanical sanding involves using a variety of power tools in order to sand off the old layers of paint. Circular sanders, belt sanders, and orbital sanders are often used, because they can remove paint layers quickly and easily.

Mechanical sanders are recommended for large pieces of furniture that have multiple layers of paint. How To Sand Off Paint: If you decide to sand off your paint finish, always use coarse, open-coat sandpaper. Other types of sandpaper are too easily clogged with paint and wood dust.

Always sand with the grain, beginning with a coarse sand paper. Once you can see the grain of the wood furniture, switch to medium grit sandpaper. Use a fine grit sandpaper to remove all remaining bits of finish.

Be sure to wear protective goggles and a face mask when sanding off old paint. Heat Stripping: Heat can now be used effectively in order to strip paint and varnish from wood furniture. Heat guns and blowtorches help to destroy the film contained in the paint, allowing it to be removed from the surface of the wood.

Both heat guns and blowtorches are suitable for removing thicker layers of paint, however care must be taken when using these tools. The heat from these tools can cause serious burns and has been known to start fires when used in poorly ventilated areas. How to Strip Paint with Heat: If you decide to strip your paint finish with a heat tool, practice a little bit beforehand.

This will give you an idea of how hot these heat guns actually get. If you are using a blowtorch, practice lighting it before you try to remove any paint. Always wear protective gloves and goggles when using these instruments.

Hold the heat gun or blowtorch six to eight inches from the surface of the furniture. Slowly move the heat gun or blowtorch over the surface of the piece of furniture. When you see the finish starting to wrinkle and bubble up, you can begin to scrape the paint off using a paint scraper.

Be careful not to hold the blowtorch or heat gun in one position for too long because it will cause the wood to burn and, possibly, catch on fire. Chemical Paint Strippers: Chemical paint strippers are typically the easiest way to remove paint. They work by softening the surface of the paint or varnish, so you can then scrape it off.

Chemical pain strippers require little physical labor and are usually quite safe to use. They also come in a variety of different forms, from gels to aerosols. Each chemical stripper is suited to a different type of furniture, so be sure to read the labels on each product carefully.

Some chemical strippers can remove up to 10 layers of paint, while others can only remove two. How To Strip Paint with Chemical Strippers: If you decide to strip your paint finish using a chemical stripper, be sure you are working in a well-ventilated area because fumes can be toxic. Also wear heavy duty, chemical-resistant gloves.

Spray the chemical stripper on the piece of furniture or paint it on thickly using a paintbrush. Leave the chemical on for the specified amount of time (typically 20 to 30 minutes). After the chemical has set, test it to see if it is ready for removal.

Using your paint scraper, scratch the piece of furniture lightly and in a circular motion. If this exposes the wood, the paint is ready to be scraped off. Additional applications of chemical stripper may be required to remove all layers of paint.

Stripping Tips: Stripping paint isnt always the easiest job in the world, so here are some tips to make the going a little more pleasant: * For irregular surfaces, use chemical paint strippers. They can cling to surfaces well and can get into all of those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. * Use steel wool or copper scouring pads to remove paint from the inside of cut outs or on legs or spindles.

* Only apply chemical paint strippers to small areas at a time. This will allow you to remove all of the paint before the chemical stripper dries. * Investigate environmentally-friendly paint strippers.

Know About Solid Wood
An overview of solid woodThe golf swing is the action by which players hit the ball in the sport of golf. The golf swing is a complex motion involving the whole body; the technicalities of the swing are known as golf stroke mechanics. There are differing opinions on what constitutes a "good" golf swing. In Work and Power Analysis of the Golf Swing, Nesbit and Serrano suggest the golf swing has been studied by scientists and mathematicians who have developed various equations to help explain the complexity of the swing. It is generally agreed that a successful and consistent golf swing requires precise timing and mechanics, from the grip and position of one's fingers, to the position and movement of the feet. At any moment of the swing, whether back-swing, downswing, or upswing, something can go wrong that will throw off the whole body and result in a mishit. The entire swing motion should move on a plane in a fluid manner. The plane can be characterized as horizontal or vertical.Shots of solid woodList of shotsA drive is a long-distance shot played from the tee box, intended to move the ball a great distance down the fairway towards the green. An approach shot is made with the intention of placing the ball on the green. The term "approach" typically refers to a second or subsequent shot with a shorter-range iron depending on the distance required.A lay-up shot is made from the fairway after the drive, but intended to travel a shorter distance than might normally be expected and/or with a higher degree of accuracy, due to intervening circumstances. Most often, a lay-up shot is made to avoid hitting the ball into a hazard placed in the fairway, or to position the ball in a more favorable position on the fairway for the next shot.A chip is a very short shot played from near the green, generally made with an abbreviated swing motion. Chip shots are used as short approach shots to the green.A pitch is slightly longer than a chip shot and thus requires a slightly larger swing. It is generally hit with a lofted club and expected to stop fairly quickly once reaching the green.A bunker shot is a shot played from a sand trap. It is hit with a lofted wedge and is intended to hit the ball high so that it can carry over the lip of the bunker while still staying on the green.A flop shot is when a player opens the club face on a chip shot to get the ball to fly over an obstacle and stop quickly or spin back once it hits the ground.A putt is a shot designed to roll the ball along the ground. It is normally made on the putting green using a putter, though other clubs may be used to achieve the same effect in different situations. A lag is a long putt designed less to try to place the ball in the cup than to simply move the ball closer to the hole for an easier putt into the hole.A bank shot is a shot played from close to a green with a steep bank confronting the player, in which the ball is played so as to pitch on the face of the bank and go over it, either running or on the bounce.Secondary characteristicsA draw is a stroke played with the effect that, for a right-handed player, the ball moves from right to left during flight. Conversely the ball will move from left to right for a left-handed player. These characteristics are achieved with sidespin by either an in-to-out swingpath or a closed clubface, relative to the swingpath, at impact.A fade is a stroke played with the effect that, for a right-handed player, the ball moves from left to right during flight. Conversely the ball will move from right to left for a left-handed player. These characteristics are achieved by having either an out-to-in swingpath or an open clubface, relative to the swingpath, at impact, again due to sidespin.A punch or knock-down shot is one with a low trajectory, that is employed when hitting into the wind or in order to avoid hitting the ball into overhead obstructions. This stroke is achieved by keeping the weight forward and the hands ahead of the clubhead through impact.Misplayed shotsA hook occurs when the clubface is closed relative to the swingpath or with an inside-out swingpath and thus flies severely from right to left for a right-handed player, or vice versa for a left-handed player. Skilled players can hook the ball at will, but most commonly it is a misplayed shot that often has negative consequences.A slice occurs when the clubface is open relative to the swingpath or with an outside-in swingpath and thus flies severely from left to right for a right-handed player, or vice versa for a left-handed player. Skilled players can slice the ball at will, but most commonly it is a misplayed shot that often has negative consequences.A push is a ball whose flight path is straight, with negligible sidespin, that ends up right of the target. The incidence angle of the clubface is x to the right of the target, and where the path of the clubface is also x to the right of the target (inside to outside path).A pull is a ball whose flight path is straight, with negligible sidespin that ends up left of the target. The incidence angle of the clubface is x to the left of the target, and where the path of the clubface is also x to the left of the target (outside to inside path).A shank occurs when the ball is struck on the hosel of the club, and thus flies at a sharp angle to the right of the intended direction (or vice versa for a left-handed player).A thin shot occurs when the forward edge of the clubhead strikes the ball too high, causing the shot to fly low, sometimes even causing it to travel across the ground, and usually comes up short of the target.A top occurs when the player strikes the top half of the golf ball causing it to dribble along the ground and come up severely short of the intended target.A fat shot occurs when the forward edge of the clubhead strikes the ground behind the ball first, causing the shot to come up short of the target.A pop-up (or sky) occurs when the ball strikes too highly on the clubface, causing the shot to travel very high, leaving it well short of its intended target.A whiff (or air shot) occurs when the golfer swings and misses the ball.A duff occurs when the golfer makes contact with the top half of the ball on follow through and then it proceeds to bounce along the ground or when the golfer chunks the golf ball causing it to bounceStroke types of solid woodChipThe chip is a type of shot generally used from short range around the green usually under 40 yards. Although any club may be used, and there are specialist chipping clubs (or chippers) available, a short iron or wedge is most common. The goal of the chip is to land the ball safely on the green and let it roll out towards the hole.PitchA "pitch shot" is a shot played with a high lofted club, typically a pitching wedge, utility wedge or sand wedge, with lofts ranging from 56 to 62 degrees. These high lofted clubs are designed to hit the ball high from short distances, usually from 40-50 yards (30-50 meters) and closer.PuttThe putt is used for putting the ball in the hole or closer to the hole (as in lagging) from the green or the fringe of the green. The putter is used for the putt. The golfer adjusts his/her putt to fit the circumstances of the play such as distance to the hole and slope of the green. The face of the club starts square to the target line. The club goes straight back and straight through along the same path like a pendulum. One strategy is to aim the ball 10% past the hole. Another is to look at the hole for long putts instead of the ball.
Why Do Ashes From Burned Wood Weigh Less Than the Wood?
Wood is primarily cellulose which is a compound of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen. If there were NOTHING else and if we had PERFECT combustion, Carbon Dioxide and Steam would be pretty much all that would be generated, and they would disappear into the atmosphere leaving NOTHING behind. In practice there are other compounds in the wood and the burning process is never 100% efficient, so some residue is left.• Related QuestionsShould i replace warped deck wood with pressure treated wood? Have You Ever Painted a Floor?
I merely did our flooring, hire it out in case you may have the money for it. in case you make certain to handle it your self, there are a pair different sanders you are able to lease. There are drum sanders and pad sanders. If the floor is in undesirable shape a drum sander is extremely aggressive and could take it right down to solid wood quickly. however the drum sander may well be problematical, provide as much as long in one spot and you get a severe high quality gouge quickly. The pad sander is extra of a dash up for flooring that are in nice condition yet merely choose the precise couple thousandsth of an inch bumped off. in spite of 36 grit paper on a pad sander you is not waiting to rip up your flooring. Pushing a sander around all day for various days on the instant will placed on you out. it could be perfect to bypass out for this project for some weeks to do the whole domicile in one shot in case you are able to1. Floor pros. Can I do hardwood directly on concrete?First, yes-hardwood and laminate can both be laid directly on concrete IF you are absolutely sure that moisture is not an issue (it does not have to be visible to be present!!!) . Second, laminate is not "better", but it is more stable, just as plywood is more stable than solid wood. Third, your available methods of installation on concrete are floating and glue-down. Both hardwood and laminate can be installed using either method, depending on brand. My recommendation- A top quality laminate would be a better choice below grade due to tem./humidty fluctuations. A floating floor on a top quality, layered underlayment (two layers-one moisture barrier, one insulating layer) will provide the quietest, warmest, most comfortable floor. Acclimate the flooring in the room for a week before installation2. What do they do with the wood from the middle of a solid wood toilet seat? They make trays for the centers of bagels ;)Seriously though most wood scrap from manufacturing is either pulped to make other products like cardboard, MDF, chip board, etc, or burned for energy3. How do plywood and solid wood differ?plywood is an engineered wood while a solid wood is made by nature. Plywood is made up of veneer and an adhesive. Solid wood is made from a roundwood/log thru a sawmilling process. Veneer in its original form is roundwood4. How should I cut a sheet of plywood for easy re-joining?Congrats on an excellently done question! In terms of how to cut the board apart I do not think it matters that much, but with an angled cut providing a wider glue surface area that will provide a stronger joint. In the right context I doubt this increased strength will actually matter though, since I assume the sheets will be supported underneath when installed as your worktops. If the plan was to have the glued-up boards support themselves and then any weight put on top IMO you will want to rethink. Even a very shallow cut giving a scarf joint I doubt would provide the needed strength if unsupported.I think your major difficulty is going to come when it comes time to glueing the pieces of ply back together, you would ideally want to have at least three long clamps with an opening somewhat wider than 6'. Obviously clamps this size do not come cheap. One option is to make rudimentary sash clamps from 2x4s, each would be nearly seven feet long but could be cut down to a more manageable length after the worktops are assembled so they would then be more practically usable in the shop. However transporting that length of 2x material might present you with the same problem as with the plywood in the first place! An alternative method to allow clamping that is sometimes used is to attach temporary glue blocks to the wood, similar to how mitre joints are sometimes held together. These blocks can be directly glued on or attached with an intermediate material (often paper), see tip here for a little more, however with plywood instead of solid wood it might not work as the surface ply can be weak. However, unlike when doing mitres here you have an advantage as one surface will be hidden so instead I would suggest screwing clamping blocks directly to the underside of the plywood, these can simply be unscrewed after the glue has cured. The small holes left in the ply after the screws are removed wo not harm its strength
Choosing Kitchen Drawer Organizers: Sustainable Is Best
The kitchen is the most important room of the home and for green homes, this would mean setting the kitchen up in the most eco-friendly fashion. Kitchen drawer organizers are a staple for any organized kitchen. They make time in the kitchen productive and efficient. Whether it is for spice jars or silverware, you can find a drawer organizer to make life in the kitchen simpler and more efficient. Choosing kitchen drawer organizers made of sustainable materials is a great way of creating a truly green kitchen.Consider the MaterialThe first step when choosing sustainable kitchen drawer organizers is to consider the material they're made of. After all, that is what makes them green or sustainable. Bamboo kitchen drawer organizers are becoming increasingly popular with green homeowners. Bamboo as a raw material is great because it looks great, is relatively low-maintenance and is a self-renewing plant or grass.Solid wood is another green choice for eco-friendly kitchen drawer organizers. Solid wood can be a green option when it has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or FSC. In other words, it means that the wood has been harvested sustainably and no trees were simply cut and not renewed.Organizers made of particle board or plywood are also sustainable options for a green kitchen. These materials basically take various types of recycled material - wood chips, sawdust and others and then use heat and glue to compress and join them together into a wood-like material.Image Courtesy: AmazonConsider the Storage Space OfferedOnce you've decided on the material for the drawer organizers, look for organizers that suit your specific purpose. Do you want them to hold spice jars? Or silverware? Or miscellaneous kitchen tools and equipment? Also, it will be a good idea to measure the inside of the drawer to ensure that you get a good fit. Some companies, such as Axis, offer expandable kitchen drawer organizers that can be adapted to hold more items as your need increases. Others offer specialty drawer organizers. Totally Bamboo, for instance, has an in drawer knife block to hold all those knives in place.Budget is ImportantAs with everything related to the home, budget will play an important role when buying green kitchen drawer organizers. Since these organizers are made of eco-friendly materials, they generally cost more than your standard plastic drawer organizers. For instance, the Totally Bamboo Expandable Utility Drawer Organizers are available from Amazon at a best price of $29.95 in comparison to an Oxo plastic organizer that sells for $14.95. However, if one truly wants to save the planet and be frugal, one can look for cheaper options. For instance, acrylic organizers made from recycled plastic are a great option for green kitchens. U.S Acrylic sells deep drawer organizers made from 100% recycled plastic from as low as $3.99. While bamboo and solid wood are obviously great choices when buying sustainable drawer organizers, if budget is a constraint, then you can go with acrylic, which though not sustainable, is an eco-friendly choice.Places to Find Efficient, Eco-Friendly OrganizersOne can look for kitchen drawer organizers made of sustainable material at various websites including, Amazon. With the green living movement spreading fast, most big retailers stock eco-friendly drawer organizers. So, you can check out favorites such as The Container Store and Target for some great deals.A green kitchen is a good place to be in. Not only will you be whipping up delicious delights for the family but you will also have the added satisfaction of knowing that your time in the kitchen is affecting the environment in a good and wholesome way. Choose sustainable kitchen drawer organizers to make that time healthy and happy for the family and the planet.
Rural Growth Is the next Step for Dexter Library.
Byline: Karen McCowan The Register-Guard DEXTER - This community has no city hall - because it has no city government - but that didn't stop a handful of local residents from pursuing an unlikely dream of opening a public library. After six years of fundraising and digging into their own pockets, the small group scraped together a down payment on a former Lane County shop building just off Highway 58 on Lost Creek Road. They formed a board of directors, landed renovation funding from the Ford Family Foundation, the Rose E. Tucker Trust, the Meyer Memorial Trust and Siuslaw Valley Bank, and opened to the public in June 2002.They outfitted the interior with solid wood library furniture handed down from the old Eugene Public Library when its new facility opened. Volunteers keep the library open by sorting and shelving books and maintaining the building and grounds. Area Eagle Scouts have added outdoor landscaping, a new sidewalk, a pedestrian walkway, a flag pole and a bike rack."A beautiful soapstone sculpture was created by Pleasant Hill art students in conjunction with Lane Arts Council and installed in front of the library building," said Candy Lanfear, the library's volunteer director. "A grant from the Cow Creek Indian Foundation made it possible to offer a Winter Reading Program, poetry workshop, cartooning and bookmaking workshops, a book club, after school homework help, summer school and art festival. This foundation also sponsored a Cards for Kids program which put a library card in the hands of over 600 students in local schools." Now the volunteers who got what was first called the Dexter Library up and running are dreaming bigger. They have formed the Friends of the Cascade Foothills Library to work to improve library services to rural residents. The name change reflects the fact that the library also serves community members in Pleasant Hill, Trent, Lowell, Jasper and Fall Creek. And residents of those areas are invited for some instant gratification on Sunday."We will honor the charter Friends at a barbecue and celebration," said Candy Lanfear, the library's volunteer director. The event will begin at 3 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and a tour of the library, including displays showing the work of children who have participated in the library's poetry, photo, and art programs."From 4 to 6 p.m., dinner and dessert will be served to the backdrop of great music from the popular band, Calamity Jazz," she said. "There will be special recognition for the dedicated volunteers who have worked so hard over the years to keep this rural library open." Organizers hope the event, sponsored by library boosters Wayne and Lynn Hamersly, will become an annual event.Area residents interested in becoming Friends of the Library members can contact Lanfear at 726-6511 or .

I have aquired a small solid wood chest of drawers that is painted a flat beige color and want to repaint it?Terry, If you really want a great finished product. Strip off the old paint, sand it down and fill any bad scratches and dings. Once you get down to the wood, you might change your mind and give it the treatment it deserves: Stain. Maybe to dress it up you can change the hardware, too! I've done a lot of paint over paint; but getting it naked and bringing It back? PRICELESS3. If my kitchen cabinets are solid-wood, can I refinish them?As a mather a fact, I just got done refinishing my old dresser and chester drawer, by stripping and restaining. TIP, after you strip the old stain off, sand the furniture untill its smooth, and apply the stain with a rag, wipe it on and wipe it off, let it sit for 24 hour before you apply the finish., All should look good Good lock
What Ceramic Tile Base Can I Use Over Solid Wood Subfloor That's Not too Thick?
3/4" t&g plywood (not OSB) over 3/4" boards would be adequate by itself, in my opinion. The industry often suggests 1-1/4" as a minimum, and you would exceed that1. Solid wood doors vs CompositeI like real wood, too. If you are going to paint them, they will need the same care as anything else you paint. If you leave them with a natural finish, they just need dusting. Occasionally they might need cleaning with a spray cleaner, like Formby's orange oil cleaner. Just spray it on and wipe the grime off. It works really well. I just redid a 60-year-old oak door that was exposed to the weather and had not been touched since the house was built. I cleaned it with Formby's and then used a natural product made of orange oil and beeswax, wiped in on, let it soak in, then rubbed it off. Looks brand new, and it's protected from the elements, too. No reason it wo not work on inside doors.2. Will engineered hardwood floors be as durable as solid wood?most new "engineered" flooring products are more durable, last longer, require less maintenance than natural products3. Woud This Make a Good Outdoor Rabbit Cage?
rabbits do not really need all that much protection from the cold as long as you keep them out of the wind and freezing temperatures they need protection from heat. they get heat stroke really easily once the temp gets into the 80's. the design you have is pretty big for one rabbit but it's a nice design with it's shady roof as long as you used wire for at least two opposite sides instead of solid wood. that will allow a breeze to come through when it gets warm and in the winter as long as you build a little 2x2 box for a den for them to get away from wind the cage should be fine1. Does anyone know if the Amish fireplace mantle is legit?I have actually e mailed them about thier commercial..They say solid wood..but it is solid plywood veneer..and not pressed board..but still is not a solid piece..also in the background in the commercial..you see about 3 or 4 air hoses behind an awning moving about fiercly where they are constructing them with air guns/tools..so much for thier handmade theory..I asked these questions specifically on my e mail and did get an answer. .The replyer mentioned that some Amish communities and by laws allow them to use modern tools and power etc..possibly they do..but I have always thought they dd everything hand powered...The way I see it..is the way they do thier commercials..they are done legally legitimately in a sense. .but but not done the way they would you like to believe they are..I say a little bit of trickery going on here, so now ..I doubt if they heat like they say they do and as efficient.2. I have a solid wood body electric guitar with a cutaway and richenbacker horseshoe pickup.?If your avatar picture is of said guitar, God only knows, theres a few one piece guitars out there but not very common. and most are custom made, the only real manufacture I can think of is Rushmore,3. Replace plywood with solid wood in play kitchen?Yes, you can. They use plywood because it is less expensive. If you are using their plans you would have to cut everything anyway, so you can use whatever material you wish. Use the same thickness so that the dimensions work out correctly. I would recommend using glue and nails to add strength and stability for children playing on it4. Solid wood worktop stains around sink?Short of replacing the material, you can lighten the stains chemically. Oxalic acid, or "wood bleach" is an old-school product that may help. I would be more inclined toward sodium percarbonate, the active ingredient in "Oxyclean". It's available in stronger products used for deck cleaning (around 25% versus maybe 11% for Oxyclean). Scraping and/or sanding will take off material, leaving low spots, and abraded wood that will restain faster than ever5. are alvarez guitars any good ?Just want to mention,The Alvarez Masterworks series guitars are solid wood not laminates .if your looking for a solid wood guitar make sure your looking at the masterwork models. Also the only reason i can see for them being less expensive is because of cheaper manufacturing coast in China.6. What to Know About Adding a Deck to Your YardMany homeowners today see outdoor living space as a must-have amenity, as a well-planned deck or patio can add a lot of enjoyment to their home. Outdoor living is seeing a bit of an explosion lately: Adding a deck is one of the most requested home projects today, and demand is steadily rising. Sloped yards can present special challenges, but they also provide opportunities for creativity that plain-Jane lawns just do not . Here are some great ways to beautify your uneven landscape. Good weather should be enjoyed to its fullest extent. To do that you have to actually go outside. also view: 33 Ideas for Your Outdoor Space: Pergola Design Ideas and Terraces Ideas What to Know About Adding a Deck to Your Yard New durable outdoor materials, furniture and accessories plus unique shade options and smart tech that lets us watch movies and have full kitchens have no doubt fueled the interest. A desk or a patios is perfect to extend your living space and enjoy the outdoors with an area for dining, grilling or lounging. Deck. A deck is a platform with decking boards, usually made of either wood or a composite material. A deck is ideal for sloped yards where you want a flat area. It's also good for homes that sit high above the ground or atop a basement, because they can be built as high as you need. If your home sits higher than about 14 inches off the ground, a platform deck is probably for you. Patio. A patio is on flat ground and is usually made of concrete, pavers, flagstone, wood or another hardscaping material. Doing a patio on a sloped lot is costlier and much more difficult, because retaining walls must be built to create a level surface. If your door opens right at the ground level, then a patio is the option for you. Many people choose to build a deck that steps down to a patio. What do you want your deck to do? The sky is the limit. So depending on your budget, consider things like an outdoor TV, a fireplace, a fire pit, a hot tub, a kitchen, a water feature and more. Also consider privacy on your deck. If you do not want to feel like you are on a stage performing for your neighbors, you will want to think about adding an arbor, a pergola, latticework or something else to create privacy. How will you access the deck? If you are using your deck for dining (which you should), you will want it located as close to your kitchen as possible. What deck material is best for you? All decks need regular maintenance. Here are the pros and cons of natural wood versus man-made composites for deck materials. The majority of decks built today are made of wood. The main reason people choose wood is for the initial cost savings. The main reason people choose composite is for the low maintenance required. Let's say the same size treated lumber or cedar deck mentioned above costs $700 to stain the first year. You will need to stain it every two years thereafter. A stripping and sanding will be required every six years before you perform the annual deck stain, which will cost about $900 total. Wood-plastic composites are still new materials relative to the long history of natural lumber as a building material. The most widespread use of WPCs in North America is in outdoor deck floors, but it is also used for railings, fences, landscaping timbers, cladding and siding, park benches, molding and trim, window and door frames, and indoor furniture. Wood-plastic composites were first introduced into the decking market in the early 1990s. Manufacturers claim that wood-plastic composite is more environmentally friendly and requires less maintenance than the alternatives of solid wood treated with preservatives or solid wood of rot-resistant species. These materials can be molded with or without simulated wood grain details. These materials require less maintenance than wood and are more resistant to insects, warping and splintering. Although many of these materials do not shrink or swell, some can swell in hot and sunny climates. This can be much more expensive than wood, especially if coordinating railing and balustrade systems are used. Wood decking: The low cost, availability and rot resistance makes pressure-treated pine and fir popular decking choices. Even with the periodic maintenance that is absolutely necessary, though, warping, twisting, shrinking and swelling will still occur. Other species such as red cedar, redwood and tropical hardwoods are more durable and have no chemical treatments, but maintenance is still required and those options can be pricey. Pavers: Brick, stone and concrete pavers are available in a range of styles and colors and are extremely durable. Very little maintenance is required from the homeowner, but builders should convey that significant site preparation may be needed to ensure proper placement, grade and drainage. Concrete: No longer just a drab gray slab, concrete is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. Designs are nearly limitless. A periodic resealing may be required, but otherwise an occasional pressure wash is the only maintenance required. Although I tend to recommend composite decks, you need to decide for yourself what fits best for your home and situation. The best way to do that is to talk with a knowledgeable deck building professional that can ask you the right questions and help you make the best decision. Just be honest with yourself from the start about whether you are going to do the maintenance yourself. Add some lights to your deck : Vintage Backyard Patio Lights
I Have a Solid Wood Body Electric Guitar with a Cutaway and Richenbacker Horseshoe Pickup.?
If your avatar picture is of said guitar, God only knows, theres a few one piece guitars out there but not very common. and most are custom made, the only real manufacture I can think of is Rushmore,1. Why would a solid wood bed frame have a CA proposition cancer warning?Probably the finish. The good news is that the cured finish is probably fine. If you are concerned, call the manufacturer2. 30 gallon fish tank on a solid wood desk, will the desk collapse?i got a 40 gallon tank on an older weeker desk it is a wood desk but its old and it isnt going anyhwere3. I-ball advertises that their speaker is made from wood, so gives good sound quality?Well to expand on what agp90spr... said; Yes, sort of.. That is as opposed to the plastic that most of the other teeny weeny speakers are made of. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is wood, in the loosest use of the word - ground up wood, cellulose anyway. The ideal material to use for speaker enclosures is a substance that is as dense and non-resonant as possible. In an ideal world speaker enclosures would be made out of sheet lead, depleted uranium, reinforced concrete, adobe etc,. but of course that's impractical. That's where MDF comes in. It's heavy and fairly non-resonant, particularly when braced. Solid wood is undesirable because it has resonance. I doubt that iball speakers are made of solid wood. It's almost certainly MDF with a layer of wood veneer over it. What they may be bragging about is that they use the aforementioned "wood" MDF and real wood veneer as opposed to MDF with a layer of wood grain vinyl. Quite frankly when speakers get really small it's almost a moot point what the enclosures are made of. The panels just are not big enough to develop undesirable resonance frequencies. Even if it is plastic, as long as it has adequate bracing ridges molded into the enclosure, I doubt that there is a noticeable difference. Probably just another exaggerated advertising claim. Nothing new in the world of speaker manufacturers4. For the vertical stud (2x4), builder A use solid wood stud and builder B use Finger Joints stud.?finger joint studs are stronger and straiter. but i would not let this determin who i hire. ask for reference and go and look at some of there work. a little time spent now will save lots of headache (and money later)5. How do I paint my solid wood bedroom suit black?Well to start if it has a finish you will want to sand it down before you whip out your paint brush. This can be very tedious and tiring. You might want to consider getting an electric sander or the attachments for your drill if you have one. It will make the task easier and faster. Then you can do a black solid paint or you could consider doing a black stain. The said will keep that wood looking appeal but give you the color you are looking for. It's up to you. Hope this helps and good luck!6. Is it recommended to make a 4.6 ft longboard with solid wood, laminates or single panels?Length is not a critical as width for a glue up, unless it's structural. Plywood maintains a much flatter surface, is stronger, and resistant to load than solid wood. A 4.6 foot long board should be from a solid piece. If the width exceeds 8 inches I would do a glue up if I chose solid wood as the solution. As with all material choices, application is critical. You have not shared the application so its the best answer I am able to offer.7. Does solid wood floor deform over time?Yes very true this is because solid wood contracts and exands much more. The solid wood also has more cracks for water or that spilt cup of tea to get into it and damage it making it deteriate faster over time more than the engineered or top layer wood. But you have to ask yourself how much quality you want.8. What is the difference between timber and solid wood in architecture?Timber - in architecture - is generally large pieces of wood (usually used for structural purposes). Typically solid wood, and typically larger than 4-6 in the smallest dimension (thresholds vary), and often milled and dried specifically for use as architectural timber. This can be used for columns(posts), beams or as parts of trusses or other structural systems. It will occasionally be used as a design element - e.g. as a bench where it's not building structure. This is larger than "dimensional lumber" or just "lumber" or "wood" which is typically things such as "2x" lumber. "4x" lumber is often referred to as timber, but "timber framing" often is considered to be 6 or larger.Heavy timber is BIG chunks of trees - think 12-16 pieces in the smallest direction."Engineered timber" generally refers to "timbers" which are made up of a number of smaller pieces of lumber. carefully (factory) glueing together structural grade 2x10's will get you one significantly bigger "piece of wood" which would take generations to grow, or in a shape that nature won't produce, and allow you to control and compensate for grain direction."Solid wood" is a marketing term relating to something built out of pieces of wood rather than other elements, or small bits of wood. e.g. a bookcase made out of "solid wood" should have no plywood or particle board in it, but may have a veneer for certain surfaces to hide end grain, or hide lower quality grain or less desirable species of wood used as structure. In flooring it'll mean the entire depth of the tongue and groove flooring is one chunk of tree, as opposed to having the top wear surface being wood, and the depth of the piece being hardboard or another wood product
Are These T.V. Stands Suitable?
=== buying a TV stand is important to go to a reputable furniture store == not Walmart or those super discount cheapies ==== Best buy - Sears - Good brand furniture stores -- all will sell you good stuff ...the use of particle board in much of todays' furniture is a big problem to me and I have gone to building my own cabinets with solid wood === that may not be possible for you but you can buy a TV stand at Ethan Allen or Macy's that is good solid wood .... I live by this """ good wood properly used has never failed"""" -- glass and brass stands are another option for you .1. Does solid wood floor deform over time?I suppose there could be some expansion and contraction if you have huge fluctuations in humidity. I do not think it is a problem usually. Solid hardwood lasts for years and years. I am actually a fan of laminate if you have dogs in the house because the finish is really tough2. When installing 5" wide solid-wood, prefinished floor do I need to nail AND glue or can I just nail it down?hi josh, just secret nail the floorboards, through the tongue so that the nails are hidden. you can hire a porta-nailer very cheaply and its also pretty much foolproof to use...if your boards were any wider, you would need to face nail too. the only place you should use glue is between butt joints (where the end of one board meets the end of another) im assuming you know all about expansion, contraction, acclimatising the floor boards etc. if you do not email me and ill give you a crash course! take your time and enjoy it, its a satisfying job. best of luck!3. underfloor heating and solid wood floorI presume that "Wet System" means water filled tubing or piping. But oh yeah, wood is no problem & is extremely common, both nailed-down traditional floors & floating laminate floors. There's no steam or moisture being released & the floors do not heat to anything more than a hot summer day. However, insulation is okay but you really just need a shiny space blanket type of radiant barrier (the shiny side of tin foil) to reflect most of the heat upward & not even consider nor attempt thermal loading. You will be happier & more comfortable with a system that can heat up & cool down or just maintain a room's or building's temperature4. I have a solid wood table that is a family heirloom, how hard would it be to stain it to cover up some of the damages. Could I end up messing it up further? How are you sure it is stained? Keep in mind that stain is just the color like when you stain your shirt with mustard. If the piece is very old the difference in color might be that the clear coat has changed color... a tricky proposition to match even for a professional. As far as trying to touch it up on your own it is probably a good bet that it will be messed up more. Rather than trying to correct the problem I suggest that you have a piece of tempered glass cut and lay it over the top. Despite the expense it will be cheaper than having the piece refinished properly.I have a solid wood table that is a family heirloom, how hard would it be to stain it to cover up some of the damages. Could I end up messing it up further?.5. how does compression affect arch top jazz guitars? It can be either. The very best are handcarved from solid wood, the cheaper mass produced ones are pressed plywood/laminate (or stretched ply over wood bracing)6. will two 4 by 6 boards bolted together be as strong as one 4 by 12 board?Assuming you are suggesting bolting the 4 x 6's together side by side to make a 8 x 6 beam the answer is definitely - No. If they are bolted together to make a 4 x 12, the answer is still No since it will not be possible, with only a reasonable number of bolts, to develop a joint between the 4 x 6's that is as strong as solid wood would be. If they were glued together to make a 4 x 12 with a glue that developed a bond strength equal to the wood strength then they would be for practical purposes equal. As an example; From the Span Tables for Joists, American Softwood Lumber Standards; (The following would be for S-P-F, Select Structural Grade, Max. But a single 2 x 12 would span 17' - 11" Also a simpler example: Consider the strength of a flat 2 x 4 (4" wide by 2" high) vs a vertical 2 x 4 (2" wide by 4" high) Stand in the middle of an 8 footer, which will deflect the most?
